How Long Since You've Pumped Your Septic Tank?

Have you ever had your septic tank pumped out? Experts recommend it be done every 5 years depending on the number of occupants of your home. Our homes are now 10 years old, so even with only two-person occupancy, it is a good idea to do it soon. Sludge builds up over time and can flow and clog the leach field, requiring very costly replacement of the leach field. I've recently received estimates for pumping from Sweet Septic for $400 plus another $350 to locate and dig down to the tank from a separate contractor. Has anyone else done this and gotten a better deal?

Hi, this is Pete and Anne. We had our septic tank pumped at 5 years. It cost about $350. Anne was trying to plant a tree and hand "found" the septic tank, which was NOT in location show on the lot plan. I exacated it and, once I opened the tank, it was full of you know what. At ten years, we had the septic servie back, but they told us they did have to pump. This "check up" cost about $150. We used Sweet Septic in Diamond Springs, and they seem well-priced and fair.

I just had mine pumped. It was down about 24", so I had them add risers so I only need to remove the sod and a little dirt next time. The overall dig, riser, and pumping was done for $1300. With two people in the 2076 sq ft model, Sweet septic estimated I could have gone for a few more years without a problem.

The tank turned out to be very closely aligned with the "as built" plan from the county, but nothing like documents I received with the house from Beazer.
